The Cerdanya is one of the natural and historical regions of the Pyrenees. It is a high plateau (more than 1,000 m of altitude) and 1,080 km2 of surface (approximately) embedded between the high peaks of the Catalan Pyrenees. This natural region is currently divided into two parts, the high Cerdanya belongs administratively to France and the Baja Cerdanya to Spain. This division is only reflected in the administrative part, the two parties constitute a single geographical entity without visible division.
The name of Cerdanya has its origin in the Iberas tribes (the Ceretanos) that inhabited the valley, there is evidence of its existence in the times of the Muslims. Land of passage of the Pyrenees, its stage of maximum splendor is at the end of the X century of the XIII th century, of this period are conserved 50 churches of Romanesque style and it is documented the existence of 90 nuclei of population. The current division between Spain and France has its origin in the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1689) which sealed the end of the Thirty Years ' War (1618-1648).
The economy of the region has always been related to the stockbreeding and the cultivation of cereals and fodder, the tourism has its origin in the late nineteenth century and it is consolidated from the first third of the twentieth century with the arrival of the train.
Its geographical and climatic situation makes the Cerdanya a privileged place for tourism throughout the year. In winter Alpine or Nordic ski resorts (Masella, La Molina, Guils, Plumbing, Arana, Sant Joan de l'Erm, Font Romeu, Bolquère-Pyrénées 2000, Puigmal 2900 ...) offer more than 121 km of slopes so you can enjoy the snow. Spring offers us the spectacle of a valley full of flowers and the paths open to practice trekking, are advisable the following routes: Road of the Good Men (GR 107), Path of the Pyrenees (Gr 11) and the way Ceretano of Santiago. Summer brings us mild temperatures to enjoy the mountains and most ski resorts offer family activities. In the fall we have the excellent opportunity to discover the forests of Cerdanya in the search for their precious mushrooms.
To enjoy nature we have the second most extensive natural park in Catalonia, the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. With a large number of routes, signposted for walking or cycling.
To rest and recover forces we can taste the varied gastronomy made with a base products of the zone: Orchard, stockbreeding, hunting, fishing ... They are the basis of some dishes where respect and love for the Earth is transmitted in their meals.
