Volcanoes, enigmatic forests, small villages, history, gastronomy... Come and enjoy one of the most interesting territories in Catalonia and that never ceases to amaze us. Welcome to La Garrotxa.
La Garrotxa is a pre-Pyrenean region located in the heart of the province of Girona. It consists of two distinct parts: the Alta Garrotxa with secluded valleys and high cliffs of rock, all covered with lush forests of Holm oaks and oaks and the Baixa Garrotxa with a much more docile landscape, with its soft valleys molded by the ancient volcanic activity of a quarantine of volcanic cones.
It is in this area more flat where most of the population is concentrated, and where is its capital, Olot. The main economic activity of the region is livestock and agriculture, the industrial and commercial activity is concentrated in Olot and its surroundings.
This territory has a great variety of natural areas of great interest. The Natural Park of the Volcanic Zone of La Garrotxa, 12,000 hectares and 11 municipalities, has how great points of interest its more than 40 volcanoes (The Croscat and Santa Margarita volcanoes are the most important) and its extensive forests of Holm oaks, Oaks, Cork oaks and beeches that cover 65% of the park's surface, are especially important the Beech Grove of Jordá (Fageda d'en Jordà) and the Forest of Tosca.
Throughout the territory we can find numerous small towns with traces of an important medieval past in their streets and houses. We must not fail to visit the towns of Besalú (with its Jewish quarter), Castellfollit de la Roca (located at the top of a riscal of 50 m high), Hostalets d'en Bas, Santa Pau...
This gentle orography allows for a very extensive network of roads that cross the entire region and connect each of these charming villages, this facilitates the possibility of making pleasant excursions on foot or by bicycle, suitable for the whole family or with a greater difficulty if we wish.
La Garrotxa is also a frontier land, situated between the Pyrenees and the plains of the Empordà ... This geographical situation has its reflection in a gastronomy with strong roots in a fertile land, we recommend you to taste the "Fesols of Santa Pau" (small and soft-skinned beans), the Ratafia (sweet liquor), pork sausages: Fuet, Secallona, Llonganissa, white sausage, black, bull white or black are the names that some of the magnificent sausages you can find , or some of his soft cheeses...
