La Noguera. Come and enjoy a territory where nature and its architectural heritage are the great attractions of a region full of places to discover.
La Noguera is the most extensive region of Catalonia (1784 km2) and also one of the less populated, more than half of its population (39,109 inhabitants) is concentrated in the two main municipalities: Balaguer (capital of the district) and Artesa de Segre.
It is a territory with a great diversity of landscapes, runs from the plains of the southern part (Noguera Baja) to the most mountainous reliefs of the North (Noguera Alta).
It is the northern part, the most attractive for tourism. The mountains, with its cliffs and large masses of forests, are an ideal place for hiking, climbing, cycling and other more minority sports such as the practice of the Hang gliding, and hides treasures such as the gorges of Mont-Rebei and Terradets.
Also the northern slope there are the reservoirs of Camarasa, Nelles, Santa Ana, San Lorenzo de Montgai and Rialb, being an ideal place for the sports of calm waters, like for example the fishing or the canoeing. The waters of the rivers are also a privileged place for rafting and canyoning.
In medieval times La Noguera was the border land of the northern boundary of Al-Andalus (Arab territory) and the Catalan counties. From this time there is a very important architectural and cultural legacy in the form of castles and in 176 Romanesque churches.
The municipality of La Baronia de Rialb is a good example of everything narrated so far. It is the town where the most Romanesque is concentrated in Catalonia! There are 23 Romanesque churches in its municipal district. In the river and swamp of Rialb you can enjoy a wide range of activities related to water, such as canyoning, kayaking or paddle surfing. And there are also many signposted trails that allow us pleasant excursions and enjoy the wildlife and nature.
